Whether you live in a small low cost house, an RDP, or just an average house, you probably wish your kitchen was a little bit bigger. Or at least wish it looked bigger, right? If you’re not ready — or willing — to knock out a kitchen wall, you can at least do the next best thing: Create the impression of a bigger kitchen with a few strategic decorating tricks.
Natural light enlarges any space. You may have no choice about the number or placement of windows in your kitchen, but you can maximize the light you do have by keeping window treatments minimal.
White is your best friend in a small kitchen. It reflects light, enhancing the sense of space and making the walls recede. When you include white on cabinetry, counter tops, walls, and the ceiling, you create a seamless space without edges or boundaries.
Glass fronts lighten the look of cabinetry and allow the eye to travel through to the back, which helps the kitchen seem more expansive.
Giving the eye a vertical path to follow increases the apparent height of the ceiling, thus lifting the lid off a boxy room. Here, decorating atop the sleek wood cabinets draws the eye upward.
Less stuff equals more room for your eye to rest as it moves through the kitchen, which’ll make it feel more spacious. This is easier said than done in a small space, I know, so aim for less clutter on the spaces you see first, like the counter top opposite the doorway, and tuck the rest of your stuff along the edges or inside your cabinets and drawers.
