The planning phase of your new kitchen renovation has come to an end and now the real work begins! And while the build-up to the renovation is always exciting, the actual renovation process is far from glitz and glam.

To assist in managing and keeping track of your kitchen renovation below is a step-by-step of what you can expect from start to finish:

Demolition of the kitchen
  • Once you have removed your food and kitchen utensils, the contractor will start removing the old kitchen cabinetry, appliances and flooring
  • Make sure that you cover the other areas of your house with heavy plastic sheeting to protect it from the dust

Tip: Consider renting a construction dumpster to hold all the discarded kitchen demolition

Plumbing and electrical changes
  • Once you have found a reputable plumber and electrician, they will install the relevant water and electrical fixtures
  • Your plumber needs to ensure that the water fixtures, such as pipes and drainage areas are positioned and connected according to the approved plan
  • Likewise your electrician needs to ensure that the electrical outlets are installed according to the structure and layout of your new kitchen
  • If your original kitchen is receiving a complete overhaul, bear in mind that the electrical wiring and plumbing will need to be moved and re-routed
Fitting cabinetry
  • Once the plumbing and electrical fixtures are fitted and secured, your chosen cabinets will be installed
  • Your contractor will install the upper cabinets first, and then the bottom cabinets
Install the counter tops, sink and faucets
  • The countertops are also installed during this phase, so make sure that the spaces for the appliances and sinks are identified and positioned correctly
  • Following this, fixtures and fittings such as the sink, faucets etc. are installed
Install the appliances
  • Once the countertops, sink and faucets are installed, your appliances will be fitted in the new kitchen
Install light fixtures
  • If your new kitchen incorporates new lighting fixtures, your contractor will install these after fitting the cabinets and countertops
Install flooring
  • Your contractor will then proceed with laying your chosen flooring covering
Painting and finishing touches
  • Once the cabinets and flooring are installed, the painting can begin
  • If necessary you may need to call in your plumber to check if the hot water systems and appliances like the dishwasher and washing machine are connected and working properly
  • Remember to allow time for the paint to dry before hanging pictures or installing decorative detail
