While a spacious airy bathroom, renovation may seem out of the question due to space or budget constraints, here are some tips and tricks that will help convert even the smallest, pokiest bathroom into luxurious and liveable space:

On the lighter side

Lighting your bathroom is important, especially in a small bathroom. To reduce shadows that create the illusion of a cramped space, consider the following:

    • Use white translucent lighting / diffusers above the mirror
    • Opt for sconces for task lighting and place them on oth sides of the mirror / vanity to reduce shadows
    • Consider two or more recessed lights and space them out to brighten up the room and reduce shadows
    • Maximise natural lighting by covering your window with a translucent shade or a stained glass. This way you still have privacy and plenty of natural light.
Floor It!
  • When tiling your bathroom, do not leave out space below the ceiling. Tiling all the way up to the ceiling creates an expansive feel.
  • Tip: Opting for one tile design from one area to the next will make the space seem much cleaner and less busy
  • In terms of tile size, the most common and safest option is medium-sized
  • However, if the spacing between your basin, toilet, and windows requires less tiling, consider smaller tiles
  • Remember to opt for light-coloured tiles (white or cream) as they reflect light more than darker tiles and wil give a spacious feel to your bathroom.
Ditch the rose-coloured glasses
  • Avoid busy patterns and darker tones as they can make your bathroom appear smaller
  • Instead opt for lighter, neutral tones when choosing your bathroom colour
  • Tip: A uniform colour for both your floor and walls makes the small space seem larger
  • Tip: For a creative flair, play with wall covering textures or opt for a pop of colour using accessories and towels.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
  • Go big on mirrors and add one above the vanity / sink. This reflects the room and makes it seem more spacious
  • If you are considering wall –mounted cabinets like a medicine cabinet, consider a mirrored cabinet. This creates the visual illusion of space
  • Another great idea is placing the mirror opposite the window. This will make it seem like you have two windows letting in additional natural light.
Keep it spacious and clutter free!
  • Avoid bulky fixtures that make your small space seem cramped
  • Tip: Consider a avanity that comes with extra storage. This could be a wire wack or anything that can help store necessities
  • Tip: keep your bathroom organised at all times and rid it of unnecessary clutter
  • Downsize your vanity by considering the following storage options:
    • Wall-mounted sink
    • Pedestal sink
    • Smaller vanities
Don’t overlook nooks crannies
  • Corners are often overlooked; however there is extra space you can use. Consider installing wall-mounted shelving or storage units for the corners.
  • Depending on the function and primary users of the bathroom, consider replacing the full size bathtub with a free-standing shower
  • Tip: Make use of a sliding door or glass screen for the shower which gives you extra space. In addition to this, the glass screen creates the illusion of space
  • Tip: Downsize your toilet. Consider newer toilets, like the round-front toilet, which will also save on water.
