Without proper planning, renovating your kitchen may well become an expensive and time-consuming project. It is thus essential that you plan carefully to ensure your completed renovation fits your style and functionality requirements.

Here are a few key considerations to assist you in planning your dream kitchen.

Functionality – What are your goals for the kitchen space?
  • List your top five priorities for your new kitchen:
    • What do you like about your current kitchen?
    • What additional features would you like to add?
    • What about the current layout does not work for you?
  • Consider the activities that will take place in your new kitchen:
    • Cooking, baking, laundry, entertainment, homework etc.
Space – Do you have enough space?
  • Consider kitchen cabinet space as well as any other storage areas you may need such as a pantry or scullery.
  • Don’t forget to leave sufficient room for all your appliances.
    • Appliances that will not be stored away such as fridge, stove, coffee machine, kettle, toaster, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher etc. will all need to be factored into the layout.
Layout
  • Do you want to design a brand new kitchen or to simply tweak the existing one?
  • Draw a sketch of the new kitchen with a clear indication of where the following will be situated:
    • Cabinets
    • Appliances
    • Work space
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical Points
    • Eating/dining  space
    • Pantry/scullery

Tip: Consider light –artificial and sunlight when designing your kitchen layout.

Tip: Get expert advice from a contractor – ask your contractor for a sketch scaled to the correct measurements.

Tip: Ensure that your current electrical circuit can accommodate the additions (appliances, lighting, etc.) you are planning to install before you buy them.

Look / Feel – Which appliances? Which trend?
  • What would your ideal kitchen look like? Do your research, find out what’s currently available in the market – visit showrooms, read magazines, conduct internet research, or visit tradeshows.
  • What colours do you have in mind for your kitchen? Do you prefer subdued neutral shades or bold vibrant colours?
  • Tiles, cabinet style, appliances and lighting should be co-ordinated to achieve the overall look and feel you are aiming for.

Tip: Make sure you use materials or products that come with a quality warranty.

Tip: The look and feel of the kitchen should complement the overall style of the interior of your home.

Budget – How much can you afford?
  • Discuss all the related costs with your contractor
  • The following costs should be taken into account:
    • Labour costs
    • Costs of cabinets and countertops
    • Cost of appliances and accessories such as door handles, mixers, sinks, bar stools or table/chairs for seating
    • Plumbing costs
    • Electrical costs
    • Cost of tiles
    • Lighting costs

Tip: Remember to add an extra 20% for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise.

Contractor – Who is the best person for the job?
  • Hire a contractor who can work within your budget.
  • Make sure you check referrals before hiring and signing any agreements.
  • Get recommendations from friends who have renovated before.
